Prayer: Father, Your timing is impeccable, and You orchestrate my life masterfully. You are gracious and You gladden the soul of Your servant with good things and good words. You are my God! Amen.
Reading: Psalm 86 key: vs. 10-13
10 For You are great, and do wonders—
You alone are God.
11 Teach me Your way, Adonai,
that I may walk in Your truth.
Give me an undivided heart to fear Your Name.
12 I praise You, O Lord my God, with my whole heart,
and glorify Your Name forever.
13 For great is Your lovingkindness toward me.
You have delivered my soul from the lowest part of Sheol.
Attention: This psalm is a prayer of David and a window into his prayer life and his worship of Adonai. It serves as a model to us of how to express our heart to God. Notice all the adulation and adoration, the affection of affirmations, “You are my God,” “For you are great, and do wonders—You alone are God.” David showers God with praise which flows from his “whole heart.”
David also has asks of God for grace and mercy (Chesed) and characterizes Adonai as One full of Chesed (mercy). My favorite ask is his ask for Adonai to give him an “undivided heart.” He is asking for a focused heart, one that is unable to be distracted or swayed. A heart that is wholly devoted to Adonai.
In some translations, verse 8 reads, “… (David speaking) Keep me as the apple of the eye.” While David claims to be the apple of God’s eye, he made this claim based on the statement we read penned by Luke in Acts 13:22,
“He also testified about him and said, ‘I have found David, the son of Jesse, a man after My heart, who will do My will.” Paul’s message in a Synagogue at Antioch of Pisidia.
The quality I most admire is the repentant heart which David possessed. When approached by the prophet Nathan, David didn’t oppose the word, he confirmed “I am the man.”
We gain the eye of God when we repent, and God applies His Chesed. We too can declare we are the apple of God’s eye when we repent and give Him an undivided heart, our whole heart.
Action: Give me an undivided heart for You Adonai and I will yield my whole heart to You.
Yield: I am yielded when I give Adonai my whole heart.
Engaged: I offer my whole heart to Adonai.
Relationship: Full relationship begins with a repentant heart.
Prayer: Father, there is none like You. You are my Adonai. You alone are God. I praise You, O Lord my God, with my whole heart and glorify Your name forever. Amen.
