Rich and Poor Alike

Prayer: Father, Your wisdom pours forth to every generation that will receive it from Your Word! Help me to heed Your Word and instruction. You define eternity. In You I find life and life eternally! Amen.

Reading: Psalm 49 key: vs. 11-12
11 Surely he must see, even wise men die.
The fool and the brutish will alike perish,
leaving their wealth to others.
12 Their inward thought is:
Their houses are eternal,
their dwellings for generation after generation.
They name their lands after themselves.

Attention: Benjamin Franklin, wrote in a 1789 letter that “Our new Constitution is now established, and has an appearance that promises permanency; but in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.

Obviously, the psalmist beat Franklin to the punch, as the concept is found in Psalm 49. Rich or poor, we leave all our “things” and “accumulations of wealth” behind. We do not take it with us. If you want to consider, death is the great equalizer. The redistribution of wealth is finally resolved as it is all left behind.

We all have seen a great manifestation of demonstration of vs. 7, “those trusting in their wealth, boasting about their great riches.” The wealthiest have multiplied and compounded their wealth as the opportunists of the world prey upon the middle class. It is quite a revelation of man’s heart and character.

The psalmist’s solution is no fear (vs. 6) and “do not be afraid when a man gets rich, when his house’s splendor increases. For when he dies, he takes nothing away. His splendor will not follow him down.

The message of the psalms is proper placement of our trust, brings peace. God, Adonai, is the source of our trust. No fear. He is with me. He will never leave me.

Action: I will not fear the evil of these days, for God is with me.

Yield: I am at peace when I am trusting in God.

Engage: I am engaged with God when I am trusting Him.

Relationship: When I am trusting God, I am at peace. He gives me peace.

Prayer: Father, You alone are my peace. In You alone I trust. Amen.

Memory Verse: Isaiah 26: 3
You keep in perfect peace
one whose mind is stayed on You,
because he trusts in You.
