The Earthquake

Prayer: Father, oh that people would embrace You and Your Word in the scriptures. The evidence of You and the validity of scripture becomes more assured every day. Glory to Your name! Amen.

Bible Project: Book of Amos Summary | Watch an Overview Video (bibleproject.com)

Reading: Amos 1 key: vs. 1 “The words of Amos, who was among the shepherds from Tekoa. He perceived these words concerning Israel during the days of Uzziah, king of Judah, and during the days of Jeroboam son of Joash, king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.” TLV

Attention: I have experienced several defining moments in my life. I remember being in a 4th grade classroom when the teacher announced the assassination of President Kennedy. I recall being on a school bus enroute to school. We were at a stop to pick up a student when the bus began to violently buck and shake. The driver thought the bus was experiencing a mechanical failure. I was sitting up towards the front kitty corner to the driver, so I witnessed his attempts to keep the bus under control. Then we all looked outside the bus as the telephone lines whipped like a big rope. The driver announced we were experiencing an earthquake. When we arrived at school, students and faculty were all gathered outside. School officials were unsure if the school building was safe, so school was canceled.

Amos introduces himself as a shepherd from Tekoa and substantiates his time of living during the reigns of two kings, Uzziah and Jeroboam. Israel was a divided kingdom, north and south. The message which Amos was to deliver, came from Adonai “two years before the earthquake.”

I was curious which earthquake Amos was referring to so I did a little investigation on the internet and found an article by Armstrong Institute of Biblical Archeology (Amos’s Earthquake: A Mountain of Evidence | ArmstrongInstitute.org), which confirms the dating of this earthquake as 8th century B.C.E, with a probable magnitude of 8.2.

I checked on the earthquake I had experienced as a youth on the way to school. It happened at 8:28 a.m. on April 29, 1965, and was a magnitude 6.7. I was in the last graduating sixth grade class as they condemned the school the next year, built in 1889.

The Biblical scriptures are true and substantiate the veracity of God. Yeshua says of Himself, “Yeshua said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life! No one comes to the Father except through Me (John 14:6).” Have you come to embrace the reality of God, Yeshua, the Holy Spirit, and the Scriptures? Today is the day to Choose Life!

Action: I Choose Life today in the person of Yeshua.

Yield: I choose to submit to the supremacy and authority of Adonai.

Engage: I choose to engage with Holy Spirit and the scriptures to establish the veracity of Yeshua.

Relationship: I choose to live in relationship with Adonai eternally.

Prayer: Father, thank You for the confirmation of the veracity of prophecy given through You to Your prophet, like Amos. Amen.

Memory Verse: John 14:6 “Yeshua said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life! No one comes to the Father except through Me.” TLV
