The Fear of God

Prayer: Father, I desire to have an appropriate fear of You. A fear which runs toward You and not from You. In the name of Yeshua, amen.

Reading: 1 Samuel 5 key: vs. 11 “So they sent word and gathered all the lords of the Philistines and said, “Send the ark of the God of Israel away—let it go back to its own place, so it won’t kill us and our people!” For a panic of death was throughout the entire city, as God’s hand was very heavy there.” TLV

Attention: We have studied and traveled through the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Old Testament writings), Joshua, and Judges. God (Adonai) established in the Torah, His law. The Torah is the woven throughout those five books. The Torah is more than the Ten Word or Commandments. However, let us use God’s instruction in Exodus 20: 3 ““You shall have no other gods before Me.”

When the Philistines captured the Ark of Adonai, where did they place it? They placed it in the “temple of Dagon.” No one entered the temple of Dagon and pushed the idol down. The hand of God made the idol to bow down to Him. God was demonstrating to the Philistines, that He was superior to any idol. That the Philistines or any nation could not add God to their gods. He demands to be the only God.

When the Hebrew nation was in Egypt. God sent a series of plagues. Who were the plagues targeting? Egypt was a pluralistic nation who worshipped many gods. Each plague humbled the gods they worshipped. Adonai was demonstrating to Egypt and Bnei-Israel, that He was God alone. There was none other beside Him.

The proper fear of Adonai leads us to worship Him only. The appropriate fear leads us to obedience.

Action: I choose today to establish an appropriate understanding of the fear of the Lord.

Yield: I choose today to submit to the mentoring of the Holy Spirit.

Engage: I choose today to engage with the living God.

Relationship: I choose today to draw closer to Adonai.

Prayer: Father, I thank You for being an all-sufficient heavenly Father. You are God alone. The only wise God. All powerful. You alone are worthy of my worship and praise. Amen.

Memory Verse: Psalm 135: 5 “For I have known that Adonai is great, and that our Lord is above all gods.” TLV
