Prayer: Father, may the words of David become words which I would reflect on and communicate to You and my children as I reach my last days. Draw me ever closer to Your side. Amen.
Reading: 2 Samuel 23 key: vs. 1-4 “Now these are the last words of David, the utterance of David son of Jesse, the utterance of the man raised on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob and the sweet singer of Israel: “The Ruach Adonai has spoken through me and His word is on my tongue. The God of Israel has said, the Rock of Israel has spoken to me, ‘He who rules over men righteously, he who rules in the fear of God—he is like the light of the morning when the sun rises, a cloudless morning of glistening as grass springs from the earth.’” TLV
Attention: I have enjoyed singing in choirs, quartets, ensembles, solo’s, musicals, and I have enjoyed a variety of singers, but I learned something new about David today, from his last words. He was known as the sweet singer of Israel. I knew he played the harp for Saul and was called upon to comfort Saul with his music when Saul was tormented. I knew he wrote many of the Psalms, but I was not aware that David was known as the “sweet singer of Israel.”
There is also a characteristic which David emphasizes in his relationship with the Holy Spirit and The God of Israel. “The Ruach Adonai has spoken through me and His word is on my tongue. The God of Israel has said, the Rock of Israel has spoken to me.” The Holy Spirit has spoken through him, and the God of Israel has spoke to him.
We tend to think of the Holy Spirit in terms of the New Testament (the book of Acts forward) and not in the Old Testament. However, there are numerous references to the Spirit of God in the Old Testament. The Father, Son (Yeshua), and the Ruach (Holy Spirit) have always existed and co-existed together as referenced in Genesis 1:26 with the use of plural pronouns, “us” and “our”.
Please do not rush over the statement by David, “he who rules in the fear of God.” We could do several studies on the fear of God. I have just been in a men’s group study of John Bevere’s book, The Awe of God: The Astounding Way a Healthy Fear of God Transforms Your Life.
I hope you will consider how the “fear of God” influences and determines your relationship with God. Healthy fear keeps us from sin and keeps us in close, intimate relationship with God.
Action: I choose today to invite the Holy Spirit to transform my life by a healthy fear of God.
Yield: I choose today to surrender my rights to my life and my body, unto the Holy Spirit.
Engage: I choose to engage in a holy lifestyle with the Holy Spirit.
Relationship: I choose today to live in close, intimate relationship with God through the Holy Spirit.
Prayer: Father, I have lacked a holy fear of You and I repent of my casual approach to obedience. I desire to be wholly obedient to You in word, thought, and action. I dedicate my life, mind, body, and soul to Your trust. Amen.
Memory Verse: Proverbs 9:10 “The fear of Adonai is the beginning of wisdom and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” TLV
