When Even Family Turns Against You

Prayer: Father, how painful it is to have a family member turn on you. Teach me how to respond. In Yeshua’s name, amen.

Reading: 2 Samuel 15 key: vs. 31 “Then someone told David saying, “Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom.” So David prayed, “Adonai, please turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.”

Attention: This passage of scripture tells us that the occurrence of Absalom’s revolt happened at the forty-year mark of David’s reign. Prophetically, we know that David’s reign is nearing the end, but Absalom is reaching for something which is not his. Not only is he disrespecting the king and his father as king, but he is also disrespecting God.

David had his moment of rebellion in adultery and murder. He repented, and he and God continued to speak to one another. Absalom uses the pretense of a relationship with Adonai to tell David he was heading to Hebron, the old worship center prior to Jerusalem. Absalom speaks of a heart for God, but his intentions are against David and for the throne.

David knows what is going on and wisely prays to Adonai to turn the counsel of Ahithophel “into foolishness.” Ahithophel, which means “brother of folly” is a former counselor of David’s, who has joined Absalom’s revolt. He is a traitor.

David knows the advice of Moses found in Deuteronomy 32: 35a “Vengeance is Mine, and payback, for the time when their foot staggers.” We find the same advice from the apostle Paul in Romans 12: 19, “Never take your own revenge, loved ones, but give room for God’s wrath—for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine; I will repay,” says Adonai.”

If you find yourself in a similar situation with a family member, make sure your relationship is right with God and then pray for the offending family member and allow God to work.

Action: I choose today to not seek revenge but allow God to reconcile and restore the offender.

Yield: I choose to yield to the authority of the Holy Spirit to heal and convict.

Engage: I choose to engage with the Holy Spirit to provide reconciliation and restoration.

Relationship: I choose to live in intimate relationship with God.

Prayer: Father, I thank You for the example of David who did not seek revenge on his son Absalom but allowed You to take care of the matter. Your will be done. Amen.

Memory Verse: Romans 12: 19 “Never take your own revenge, loved ones, but give room for God’s wrath—for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine; I will repay,” says Adonai.” TLV
