Jeremiah of Libnah

Prayer: Father, the Bible is Your story from Genesis to Revelation. Jeremiah’s story is also contained within Your story. Help me to see how my story is contained within Your story. Amen.

Reading: Jeremiah 52 key: vs. 1-2 “Zedekiah was 21 years old when he became king and he reigned 11 years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Hamutal the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah. And he did what was evil in Adonai’s eyes, just like all Jehoiakim had done.” TLV

Attention: If you have read the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, & John), the first four books of the New Testament, you may have discovered that one of the apostles never includes his name but references himself by saying, “The disciple who Yeshua loved.” If you do not know who that was, I will leave it for your discovery.

I made a similar discovery today. While reading chapter 52, quizzically, I asked myself, could Jeremiah of Libnah and the author of the book of Jeremiah be the same person? Ironically, according to several internet sources, the consensus is that Jeremiah of Libnah and Jeremiah the prophet is the same.

Jeremiah is called the weeping prophet. His title is attributed mostly by his lamenting of the warnings of Adonai’s prophetic warnings of approaching judgement. However, his grief and lamenting must have been compounded by his documenting of the assassinations of his grandchildren carried away in exile. Did he witness their slaying? The text does not say he was in attendance. However, it does say that Zedekiah was made to watch and then his eyes were “put out.” The last images he ever saw was of his grandsons martyred.

For me the value of the study of Jeremiah has been the new awareness of the office of a prophet and the gift of prophecy given to us by God. Prophecy is for today and has been for all time. The frequency of prophetic utterings will escalate in these later days. Be prepared to receive and listen to prophetic warnings. They are for our benefit.

Action: I choose to value the prophetic gifting and warnings of prophecy.

Yield: I choose to yield to the prophetic message for today.

Engage: I choose to engage in the prophetic message for today.

Relationship: I choose to be informed by the prophetic gifting given to Prophets.

Prayer: Father, I thank you for the story of Jeremiah, wrapped in Your story. Thank you for his faithful obedience to be Your mouthpiece. May we be faithful to listen to Your prophetic warnings and obey. Amen.

Memory Verse: Acts 2:17-18 “And it shall be in the last days,’ says God, ‘that I will pour out My Ruach on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even on My slaves, male and female, I will pour out My Ruach in those days, and they shall prophesy.” TLV
